Orchid




One feature of composing an orchid in sumi-e is the phoenix eye. The phoenix eye is the negative space formed when two leaves of the orchid cross.

Orchid


The orchid is one of the four gentlemen of Japanese sumi-e painting. The four gentlemen are four basic forms that contain brush strokes that are used over and over in sumi-e painting.

Orchid

Many orchids that grow in the tropics are anchored to trees. Orchids that grow in temperate climates are usually terrestrial. Temperate orchids are often found in rocks or rocky soil.

I thinned the sumi-e with hide glue. The effect is a flat washed-out look to the painting.

The Orchid family is the largest family of flowering plants. There are about 25,000 species of orchids. Most orchids are found in the tropics, but some species are found in temperate climates.
